Since 1965, the demographic composition of immigrants in the United States has changed significantly, bringing with it increasing diversity. This change in immigration has significantly altered the distribution of the immigrant population across different states in the country. German immigrants formed the majority group in 19 states back in 1980, while Mexicans dominated in only 10. By the year 2000, Mexicans had become the largest immigrant group in 31 states. Despite this, since 2007, there has been a slowdown in immigration from Mexico, leading to a decrease in its share of the total immigrant population, dropping from 29% in 2010 to 23% in 2022.
As for recent immigrants, in 2022, Mexico remained the primary source of new immigrants, with approximately 150,000 people. India and China also stood out that year, with around 145,000 and 90,000 immigrants, respectively. Other countries, such as Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, and Canada, also recorded between 50,000 and 60,000 new immigrants.
Regarding immigration status, 77% of immigrants are legally in the country. Of these, 49% are naturalized citizens, 24% have permanent residency, and 4% have temporary residency. Unauthorized immigrants make up 23% of the total foreign population in the United States. Between 1990 and 2007, the number of unauthorized immigrants tripled, reaching a peak of 12.2 million, but gradually declining.
